Willebroek, Belgium

One of the more difficult visits was to the Breendonk Concentration Camp, which is located just outside of the city of Brussels in Willebroek. Our group visited there to recognize what took place during WWII. This picture is more reflective of the time it was transformed into a concentration camp where mostly resistance fighters, political prisoners and other innocent hostages were taken. The day we visited was a beautiful sunny day and it was an odd contrast to the nightmare this place must have been. Along with the displays on the hostages and conditions, there is a display on the resistance organizations that operated at the time as well as many resistance fighters who gave their lives up in an effort to free those from Breendonk.
